This week we also celebrated the Great Kindness Challenge. We are working extra hard to spread kindness all week long. On Tuesday, we wrote ways that we can show kindness in our journals. "I was smiling at Sandro," said Marissa. "I colored the whole classroom," said Laila. "I drew playing with Jackson in the class," said Guri. On Wednesday, our school counselor, Mrs. Hines, made it possible for kids to spend recess time making Valentine's Day cards for children in the hospital. "We had so much fun," said Binuthi. In science this week, we spun quarters to see if they would land on heads or tails. Then we made rubbings of both sides of the coin. In math we focused on making 11 and 12 using ten frames. Our art teacher, Mrs. Shane, sent our awesome snowman art back to us. It's so great to have fresh, original art decorating our classroom. We love art with Mrs. Shane!! Another highlight of our week has been...sunshine!!! After so many rainy days inside, it feels great to see these kids running around outside again. See what else we have been doing in TK this week:

We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he wanted all people to be treated as equals. We learned he believed in kindness and fairness. Because we observed his birthday on Monday, we wrote happy birthday messages to Martin Luther King Jr. in our journals. "We had fun and sang happy birthday Martin Luther King," said Marissa. "I know Adan wanted to write something nice," said Tristan. In science, we learned about penguins and opened a fun new "roll and race" penguin board game in math. Students were especially excited when the puppet center was opened. They have been waiting all year for it! We learned how make a puppet show interesting by giving the characters a problem and making sure they find a solution to end the show. We also revisited ABC order with a new letter train puzzle. It's so long that it stretches across the whole rug! In another new center, we are starting to focus on medial sounds with a CVC stacking job. Students sort and stack words by listening for the short vowel sound. In our Handwriting Without Tears program, we have learned the correct formation for all uppercase letters. Yay! This week we are reviewing all letters we have learned from A-Z. Next week, we start our focus on lowercase letters.
Read our newsletter to learn what else we have been doing in TK this week. It's Ollie Octopus week with our Zoophonics friend and it's extra special because one of our TK friends is named Ollie too. Here he is after finishing his New Year book. He worked hard on it! We also did a little science experiment with oil for Oo week. Students hypothesized that it would color the water when poured together. They were surprised to see the oil rise to the top of the water instead. This week we welcomed a new student, too! We are so happy to be making a new friend. He has given our class has many chances to show kindness. We love to show kindness in TK. Happy New Year! The best part about coming back to school so soon after New Year's Day is that we get to celebrate together. On our first day back, we made countdown balls modeled after the ball that is dropped in NYC every year. Fun Fact: Before digital clocks and satellite times sent to smart phones, many cities had balls that dropped at 12:00PM each day for citizens to use to set their watches.
Students learned that the definition of resolution is "a strong decision to do or not do something." They chose one thing that they wanted to do this year. Their goals, in no particular order, are: to facepaint, do flower gardening, read, engineer cars, be a Pokemon trainer, clean up, help people, shoot a Nerf gun, be a hamster helper, go to the park by car, practice pretending to be a mom, visit a police officer, learn more reading skills, spy, and be a red mermaid. Five year olds are awesome. It's going to be an exciting year for these kids! Art coming soon. :) Check out our newsletter and see what else we've been doing in TK this week:
